Matthew McGuchan

Matthew is based in the Monastery on Mondays and Tuesdays. His role involves technical support and the delivery of instruction for various animation techniques including stop-motion and hand-drawn work, plus a range of 2D and 3D digital programmes. He offers inductions and technical support for the three recording studios based on the ground floor, and he can also provide technical assistance with editing and post-production software including Adobe Premiere and After Effects.

I trained in Fine Art Filmmaking at St Martins, specialising in films that mixed stop-motion animation with live action. My 35mm short films in the 1990s were funded by Greater London Arts, the BFI and BBC2.

The Enchanted Forest (1993) toured UK cinemas as part of the BFI Summer Shorts package; Isle of Dogs (1996, a collaboration with Simon Faithfull) was screened on BBC2 and at festivals around the world.

After completing an MA in Creative Writing at UEA I worked as a screenwriter for over a decade, represented by Sean Gascoine at United Agents. I returned to digital filmmaking with Jerome’s Weakness, a 2008 commission from Screen East, and have continued to produce content through my production company, Livid Films.

As a director of the CIC FILM Suffolk, I have recently co-produced two collaborative feature films, With Love from Suffolk (2016) and The Haunted Hotel (2021), which are available via online platforms including Amazon Prime.

Our third feature, Once Upon a Time in Suffolk, has the theme of fairy tales and will provide an opportunity to bring together my production experience with the amazing developments in animation and VFX that are at the heart of my technician’s role in Norwich.
