Bevis is the Physical Computing Technician providing students and researchers with electronics support through one-to-one sessions and workshops, helping them incorporate all manner of motors, sensors, LEDs, speakers and microcontrollers into their projects to make them move, sense, shine, talk and think.

Since taking apart toys and hacking video game consoles as a child I’ve been tinkering with technology. Insatiably curious, I pursued an education in science before finally embarking on a degree in Creative Computing at Goldsmiths University of London.

Quickly I got engrossed into the collaborative and social aspect of tech and development and found myself at a hackathon, game jam or meetup almost every weekend. By the end of my second year, I was president of the newly formed Goldsmiths tech society – Hacksmiths and had organised three 100+ attendee events.

As my artistic practise developed, I became more interested in physical computing, building out a hardware library for the society and becoming an advocate for the original 1960s MIT hacker ethics. Post university, I became an expert in addressable LED lighting, fitting out bars and venues with cutting-edge lighting and fabricating electronics for up-and-coming artists.

Today, I revel in the current and rapidly developing potential of physical computing and live for a student’s response of “wait that’s possible!?”
