Sarah de Villiers

Lecturer, BA (Hons) Architecture

Sarah de Villiers is a Lecturer in Architecture, teaching across the BA and MArch programmes. Her research and practice (spaceKIOSK) investigate spatial politics through drawing, mapping, and critical architectural production. She is particularly interested in the intersections of trade, decolonisation, and global economic systems, exploring how material and financial flows shape built environments. Her work spans spatial research, writing, and curation, with a focus on power, representation, and the uneven geographies of transformation.

I’m an architectural researcher, designer, and educator interested in the entanglements of space, power, and economy. I work in interdisciplinary ways, often in collaboration with artists, researchers, and institutions across multiple geographies.

My practice uses drawing, mapping, and spatial strategy to explore how architecture intersects with trade, land, property, and systems of extraction and circulation. I lead spaceKIOSK, a research-led practice operating at the intersection of design, technology, and material economies.

Recent projects span contexts including Johannesburg, Accra, Berlin, Milan, and Venice, engaging with the politics of territory, infrastructure, and cultural production. I was an assistant curator for the 18th International Architecture Exhibition at La Biennale di Venezia (The Laboratory of the Future, 2023) and a tutor in the Biennale College Architettura.

I have worked with the African Futures Institute (Accra), African Centre for Cities (Cape Town), and the Archive of Forgetfulness. I was a co-founding director of Counterspace, a Johannesburg-based architecture practice. I also taught for several years at the Graduate School of Architecture at the University of Johannesburg, across Unit 18 and Unit 14.
