Virtual Production Studio
Norwich’s state-of-the-art Virtual Production Studio is home to groundbreaking Sony technology, placing the city at the forefront of digital storytelling and next-generation filmmaking.
Norwich’s Virtual Production Studio is the result of an exciting collaboration with global electronics manufacturer, Sony.
The studio provides Norwich students with access to groundbreaking technology – and is the first educational and commercial facility of its kind in the UK to feature not only Sony VERONA panels for virtual production, but also a Sony VENICE camera to capture content and beyond.
At nine metres wide and four metres high, the LED volume uses 6.7 million pixels to deliver sharp, cinematic visuals that look lifelike both in person and on camera, giving performers the ability to act in front of immersive backdrops in real-time.
The Virtual Production Studio also features professional audio systems and custom lighting, to ensure high-quality image reproduction in virtual environments.
Virtual Production at Norwich
With access to the Virtual Production Studio, Norwich’s film, animation, games and visual effects students will benefit from working with:
Real-time LED wall backgrounds
Backgrounds replace green screens with dynamic, real-time rendered environments for natural lighting and reflections.
Seamless world-building
The ability to create expansive, virtual locations without costly physical sets or on-location shooting.
Previsualisation and simulcam
Allowing directors to visualise final shots live on set, adjusting camera angles and lighting instantly.
Hybrid live-action and CGI
Integrating actors into digital environments with perfect perspective tracking and lighting consistency.
Faster production and lower costs
Reducing travel, set construction and post-production time while maintaining creative flexibility.
Norwich’s Virtual Production Studio is based at Havers Road, alongside the University’s Immersive Visualisation and Simulation Lab. Together, the combined studio forms a new hub for digital creativity, benefiting students, creators and the wider community.
