Research and Knowledge Exchange
An-Ting 安婷 is a Research Fellow working at the intersection of piano, electronics and immersive performance. Her research transforms lived experience into experimental sound worlds shaped by technology and narrative.
An-Ting 安婷 is a versatile composer, pianist and multimedia artist whose work moves fluidly between electronic sound, spoken word, and immersive performance. Drawing deeply from her lived experiences, she weaves intense, low-frequency electronic textures, droning rhythms and piercing vocal elements with acoustic piano to explore the ever-shifting relationships between human beings, nature and the spirit world.
Described by NOTION as “the one-to-watch in the world of composing,” An-Ting has received wide critical acclaim for her genre-defying work. Her album with Daniel York Loh, every dollar is a soldier / with money you’re a dragon, was praised for “manifesting soaring ballads that bring electronica and tender piano melodies together,” while her latest album, Lost Communications 失絡之聲, was introduced by Electronic Sound Magazine as “birdsongs augmented by electronics that fly rapidly between dark and light.”
Her large-scale productions and collaborations span live performance, digital exhibition and immersive technology. Key works include Lost Communications 失絡之聲 (presented at Secret Garden Party, 93 Feet East and Colchester Arts Centre), Departure (Snape Residency, Broadway Theatre), HOME X (nominated for the UK Theatre Awards for Digital Innovation, first presented at the Barbican), CAN X Two Temple Place (winner of Arts Council England’s Digital Culture Award – Storytelling), Augmented Chinatown 2.0 (an AR, music and drama app), Lao Can Impression (Southbank Centre’s Purcell Room), and Bats and Beats (Soundstate Festival, Shanghai tour).
From 2018 to 2023, An-Ting led the National Portfolio Organisation Kakilang, championing an artist-led structure that foregrounded new narratives by Southeast and East Asian artists and fostered ambitious cross-artform collaboration. Her academic background reflects a rare fusion of science and art: she holds a degree in Chemistry from National Taiwan University, alongside both an MMus and PhD in piano performance from the Royal Academy of Music.
Her work has been presented at major international venues and festivals including the Barbican, Southbank Centre, V&A, King’s Place, LSO St Luke’s, Sheffield Theatres, Secret Garden Party, Snape Maltings, Akademie der Künste Berlin and the National Theater Taiwan.
In 2012, she founded Concert Theatre, pioneering a new hybrid form that merges music and theatre. Productions such as Kiss of the Earth (UK tour, 2015) and The Tenant (National Portrait Gallery, 2017) were met with strong critical and audience response.
An-Ting 安婷’s discography includes Lost Communications 失絡之聲, every dollar is a soldier / with money you’re a dragon (with Daniel York Loh), Songs from My Room, Carnival of the Animals and Water Image. She is currently developing her next electronic album inspired by underwater soundscapes, with support from Sound UK, continuing her forward-looking exploration of technology, environment and human consciousness.
