In Memory of Professor Lady Rachel Cooper OBE
Modified:
Norwich University of the Arts is deeply saddened by the passing of Professor Lady Rachel Cooper OBE, a valued member of the University’s Governing Body since 2018 and a distinguished leader in design research, innovation, and policy.
Rachel held the position of Distinguished Professor of Design Management and Policy at Lancaster University and was Director of ImaginationLancaster, an open and exploratory design-led research centre conducting applied and theoretical research into people, products, places, and their interactions. She also served as Chair of the Lancaster Institute for the Contemporary Arts and as President of the Design Research Society.
Her work had a profound impact on the integration of design into public policy. Her research interests were wide-ranging – spanning design thinking, design policy, sustainability, wellbeing, crime prevention, and socially responsible innovation. Her work regularly bridged academia, government, and industry, exemplifying the role of design in addressing complex societal challenges.
She authored numerous influential publications on design thinking, sustainability, and socially responsible design. She was the founding editor of The Design Journal and series editor for the Routledge series Design for Social Responsibility.
At Norwich University of the Arts, she contributed significantly to the University’s strategic direction during a period of considerable growth and change. Whether guiding institutional priorities or championing student-focused initiatives, she brought deep expertise and thoughtful insight to her role as governor.
Beyond her professional achievements, Rachel was a devoted mother, grandmother, wife, and friend. Our thoughts and deepest condolences go to her husband, Professor Sir Cary Cooper, her daughters, grandchildren, and all who knew and worked with her.
Vice-Chancellor, Professor Simon Ofield-Kerr, commented:
“It was an immense privilege to have worked with Rachel as a governor. Her insight, generosity, and unwavering commitment to design, education, and innovation will leave a profound and lasting impact on the University and far beyond.
“Rachel was an extraordinary person – gracious, intellectually curious, and always generous in her support for others. My heartfelt condolences go to her family, friends, and colleagues at this very sad time.”
Cathy Armor, Chair of Council, added:
“Rachel was an energetic, engaging, and highly respected member of Council. She was both an inspiration and a guiding presence to fellow governors at Norwich University of the Arts.
“Her passion for education and belief in the power of creativity to shape society leave behind a remarkable legacy. She will be greatly missed.”
