Student Ambassador Guide: Norwich

Student Ambassador and BA (Hons) Animation student Lucien talks us through her favourite things about Norwich.

People walking along a narrow, cobblestone street lined with historic buildings in Norwich. A sign in front of a brick building covered in green vines reads "Cinema City Café Bar". The scene is bright and sunny, with blue skies.

I really enjoy living in Norwich, it is truly a city for creatives. I looked at a few Universities across the country, all outside of London. For me, it was important to live in an area that is thriving creatively while also being able to live on a student budget. I was drawn to Norwich as I have visited quite a lot over the years – being from Suffolk it is not too far away but always presented a unique and interesting trip. It is a smaller city, but bursting with charm and odd little quirks. This atmosphere complements the University wonderfully, providing plenty of opportunities to take your studies out and about.

Throughout the different seasons, different aspects of the city shine. In Autumn and Winter, the cozy cafes dotted around the city centre are great places to warm up and draw — along with our own café, The Feed. In Spring and Summer, the river Yare lights up with wildlife and kayaks, with pubs and restaurants sparkling along the water’s edge. There are a lot of things to take part in throughout the year too, such as The Forum’s Maker’s Festival — where I had the opportunity to present a range of animation-themed activities for young people to participate in.

Norwich’s music scene also really impresses me, there are always bands, singers and musicians busking in the city — many of them also performing gigs at places like The Waterfront and Voodoo Daddy’s. At the LCR, found on University of East Anglia’s campus, we have larger artists come fairly often, such as Gary Numan (wow!!!), Beabadoobee and many more. If you are interested in smaller music gigs, The Waterfront is the place to be. I have been there a number of times for DJ sets and band performances — my personal favourite set being The Go! Team.

I have also come to really appreciate the sheer variety of cafes we have here. Some standouts are Slice + Dice, The Cat House and The Bicycle Shop. Each with different theming and facilities, there is a spot for everyone. Slice + Dice have a great array of boardgames for all ages and skill-levels, with vegan food and a variety of drinks on offer; it’s a really fun environment with friendly staff.

For cat lovers, you need to visit The Cat House on Dereham Road. They host a plethora of cat-themed events such as cat life drawing, pottery painting and lazy lounge sessions. At the time of writing, they are home to 17 happy felines who each boast friendly and unique personalities.

The Bicycle Shop is my favourite café, mostly for its versatility. The inside space is full of life, with a classic yet trendy feel. If you are a plant lover, this place is for you. They offer different seasonal menus with fine ingredients for all times of the day, also with a great selection of teas, coffee and cake.
