Accommodation FAQs

Students must submit their accommodation application by 8 June to be guaranteed a room in our halls of residence.

No. Applications are not allocated on a first-come, first-served basis. Students who apply by the deadline will all be considered together and allocated accommodation after the deadline.

Yes, most people get family or friends to help them move in.

Each accommodation may have slightly different rules for this.

For Duke Street Riverside, Beechcroft and Rochester Court – yes, you can have visitors but not during the day. Visitors can stay overnight, as long as the accommodation has advance notice of who is visiting and when.

If you’re living in university accommodation you’ll need a TV Licence to watch TV in your own room. Shared areas may already be covered by a TV Licence.

If you live at another address outside of term time, you can use its TV Licence while you’re at university on any device that’s:

• battery powered
• not plugged in
• not connected to an aerial

Full-time students are exempt from council tax. Universities will normally inform the local council that students live in halls. If needed, students can request a certificate confirming their student status.

Yes. While many students move to private housing after their first year, second- and third-year students can still apply to stay in halls if rooms are available.

Yes. Most accommodation options require a guarantor, usually a family member or friend who agrees to cover your rent as a student if you cannot pay. Third-party guarantor services are available if needed.

Most of our accommodation contracts are 44 weeks, which aligns with the academic year. Some private partner halls (such as Crown Place) offer 46-week contracts.

Rent usually includes:

• Gas, electricity, and water
• Wi-Fi
• Access to kitchen facilities
• Maintenance and support staff

Some buildings also include laundry, while others have paid laundry facilities.

No. We don’t require accommodation deposits for halls applied for through the accommodation portal.
