The University no longer offers extensions. In their place, we have the Late Submission Policy. This means we deduct marks* if you submit your work late.
There are ways to receive a waiver under the policy which allow you to submit work a maximum of 5 working days after the deadline without penalty.
*UG Year 2 and 3 only. If you are Year 0, Year 1, Diploma, or PGT, please note that you can submit up to 5 working days late for one unit in any one academic year.
If you have a ‘waiver’ this means that you will be able to submit up to 5 working days’ late for your submission without being subject to any penalties.
To receive a waiver, you must:
Please note that if you have an upheld extenuating circumstances claim, this will be for specific unit(s) and you may be subject to penalties if you submit late for units or assessments that are not included in your claim.
Students in receipt of DSA are automatically given the waiver and do not need to apply. If you receive the waiver because you receive the DSA, the waiver applies for the duration of your course.
We would encourage you to apply for extenuating circumstances, even if you have the waiver for the late submission policy, if your circumstances meet the criteria in Section F of the 2024-25 Student Regulations and Procedures.
You will need to provide third-party supporting documentation with your claim which bears witness to your circumstances and is relevant to the timeframe reported. The outcome of this will be considered by the Assessment Board when they meet to discuss grades and progress.
No, your new submission deadline from the waiver is the final deadline to submit your work. Anything submitted over 5 working days late will be marked as a non-submission.
For example, if your deadline is 12.30pm on Friday 15th November, you would have until 12.30pm on Friday 22nd November to submit your work. Anything submitted after 12.30pm would result in a non-submission.
The provisions of the late submission policy for students to submit late do not apply to referrals or resubmissions.
The exception to this is where a student has an agreed waiver through a reasonable adjustment or an upheld extenuating circumstances claim which specifies that a referral or resubmission attempt is included.
If you are unsure what is included in your upheld extenuating circumstances claim, please email aso@norwichuni.ac.uk.
We recommend that you talk to your tutors if you are thinking about submitting late, but you’re not formally required to do so.
The Disability team would be the best people to speak to regarding evidence of a condition. You can reach out to the Disability Team on OurNorwichUni, by completing the webform and supplying evidence of your disability or condition. They can have a conversation with you about a range of possible options as to how you can be further supported by the University, one of which might be a waiver of the late submission policy.
Please note that simply submitting evidence of your disability via the webform above will not necessarily lead to an automatic waiver of the late submission policy.
If you submit your extenuating circumstances application or contact the Disability team at least 10 working days before the submission deadline, we will aim to let you know before the deadline whether you will be able to submit late without penalty.
You can apply or contact the team after this time, but we cannot guarantee that we will get back to you before the submission deadline.
For 2024-25, the final deadlines for extenuating circumstances applications are:
12 noon, Thursday 1 May 2025 (for undergraduates, the MArch, and Teaching Blocks 1 and 2)
12 noon, Wednesday 23 July 2025 (for undergraduate and MArch resubmission, and Teaching Block 3)
Yes, you have still used your chance to submit late without penalty, regardless of the result that you receive for the submission.
