Spatial Ecologies Summer Course launches

Norwich University students are invited to join a unique one-week course this September, taking their design practice beyond the studio walls and into the heart of nature.

The Spatial Ecologies course will explore ecological approaches to design, using cutting-edge research to discover new ways to address climate change while contributing to practice-based research.

Course highlights include:

• Exploring the unique ecologies of Halvergate Marshes & Breydon Water, one of the UK’s most climate-vulnerable landscapes. These environments, shaped by human activities and sea-level rise, offer a unique backdrop for understanding the connections between design, climate change and history.
• Hands-on learning: Over the course of the week, students will work with experimental art and design approaches for engaging with the site, intended to inspire their designs.
• Transdisciplinary expertise: The opportunity to learn from a diverse, international team of experts in architecture, design, art, performance, visual storytelling, and research.
• Field trip to the Broads: An immersive field trip to the Norfolk Broads, where students will gather insights and inspiration directly from the environment.
• Showcase of work: The chance to contribute to artistic research by creating a collective drawing, which will be featured in a public exhibition at St Mary’s Works.

Course costs

The course is free to successful applicants. You will need to pay for your journey on public transport for the field trip (around £11) and provide your own food and drink.

Application process

The course is open to BA students starting their 2nd, 3rd, or Level 5 Diploma year, as well as current MA and PhD students at Norwich University of the Arts.

Places are limited. Please register your interest via our online form. The deadline for applications is 9am on Friday 5 September.
