Beyond the Frame photography competition 2023
The Beyond the Frame photography competition is open to students aged 11 to 19 both in the UK and around the world, who are in full-time Secondary or Further education. You do not need to be studying Photography or a creative subject in order to enter.
The Beyond the Frame competition was launched in 2017 to encourage young photographers to develop their craft and showcase their talent. In its debut year, the competition attracted more than 170 entries; by 2022 this rose to over 500 entries from around the world.
Judges
BA (Hons) Photography course leader James Smith will be joined by acclaimed photographers Cat Gundry-Beck and Clive Booth, to judge this year’s entries and award the first prize of a new Canon EOS M50 Mark II camera for each age category.

For people-focused imagery, such as portraiture, fashion or editorial.
Places
For imagery such as culture, nature, architecture, or landscape photography.
Things
For imagery such as still life, food/product, lifestyle or fine art photography.
Categories
- 11-15 age category
- 16-19 age category
When thinking about the work you’d like to produce and enter for the competition, you should consider the things that interest and excite you. Photography gives you the opportunity to explore and investigate the things that you care about, and through your approach you can tell others why your subject is so interesting.
Don’t worry about fitting your work too closely to the ‘People, Places, Things’ award categories. Focus on finding a subject that engages you and best shows your abilities, as this will shine through for the judges.
How to enter
You can enter up to three photographs and one piece of moving image (up to one minute in length). They can be a series on the same theme or independent images.
They must all be your own work.
