Norwich University of the Arts opens Phase Two of landmark Bank Plain building

Norwich University of the Arts has officially opened Phase Two of its ambitious redevelopment at 20 Bank Plain — a landmark Grade II listed building in the heart of Norwich. 

Prominently positioned at the top of Prince of Wales Road, the Bank Plain site was home to Gurney’s Bank from 1770 with the current building opening as Barclay’s Bank in 1926 and, more recently, was home to the OPEN Youth Trust and a popular music venue. Since acquiring the building in 2022, the University has progressed a programme of restoration and used the space to pilot new models of interdisciplinary teaching and research.

Phase One, completed in September 2023, delivered a range of flexible work and meeting spaces to support creative practice and research. Among the highlights was the transformation of the former Banking Hall into a striking, multi-purpose creative project studio. As one of the largest spaces of its kind in UK higher education, it is now widely used for collaboration and experimentation, popular with both students and staff.

Phase Two — designed by Hudson Architects and delivered by NCL Contractors — introduces a suite of purpose-built, fully integrated student support facilities offering a wide range of services.

The redevelopment features a striking central staircase that connects the building across multiple levels, enhancing flow and visibility throughout the space. A focus on sustainability is evident in the use of reclaimed materials — including timber flooring originally installed in a Scottish gym.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Simon Ofield-Kerr commented:

“The refurbishment breathes new life into this iconic and historic building — preserving its legacy while transforming it into a vibrant centre for student life and creativity. With new spaces for the canteen, support services, and the Students’ Union, Phase Two creates an inspiring focal point at the heart of our city campus. Bank Plain strengthens our connection with Norwich and supports the continued growth of our university community.

Phase Three of the Bank Plain project is set to further transform the building’s historic banking hall and London Street entrance into a new public-facing centre with a flagship library, gallery, café, and collaborative spaces.
