‘I Know What I Did This Summer’ – a drawing project by BA Interior Design students
The project was set by BA (Hons) Interior Design Lecturer, Lisa Thurlow, for students to complete over the summer break.
To encourage creativity over the summer holidays, BA Interior Design students were tasked to complete a 10 minute speed sketch each day.
Students could sketch anything – from a place they visited, something in their garden, a pet or something they’d eaten.
“Drawing for all forms of design practice is so vital,” said Lisa, BA Interior Design Lecturer. “It allows the brain to generate ideas at speed, develop concepts and become a better creative thinker.”
“I am so chuffed that students took up the challenge, had fun and increased their ability in such a short time”

“Without drawing, the brain can struggle to handle all the information it needs to process” said Lisa.
“By asking for a 10-minute sketch, it takes away the stress and anxiety that can come with drawing. The resulting drawings are intuitive, unselfconscious and full of energy.”
“It proved that even an anxious student can overcome their self-doubt and feel comfortable drawing where they otherwise would have avoided it” said Lisa.
