Illustration graduates longlisted in World Illustration Awards 2020
Ollie Hirst and Sophie Cane, BA (Hons) Illustration graduates have both been longlisted in the AOI World Illustration Awards 2020, held in partnership with the Directory of Illustration. There were over 4,300 entries to the awards spanning 10 categories, with just 500 illustrators making it on to the longlist.
Ollie Hirst is a conceptual illustrator who as a natural affinity to science and the human body, alongside real-world topics. He was longlisted in the Professional Editorial category for his spot illustration ‘The Shadow King’, which he illustrated for The Big Issue.
The article reviewed the book ‘The Shadow King’, a story which takes us back to the first real conflict of World War II in Ethiopia, casting light on female soldiers.
“I see this as a huge personal achievement to be considered one of the best editorial illustrators in the competition and it’s definitely lifted my mood!” said Ollie.

Sophie Cane, who is currently studying on MA Communication Design has a specific interest in illustrating for subjects including heritage, environmental challenges and identity.
Sophie has also been awarded a place on the longlist in the New Talent, Non Commissioned section under Design, Packaging and Print.
Sophie entered her project ‘Ziran’ which is aimed at primary schoolchildren and hopes to enhance their education of the textiles industry.
Her project features a friendly alpaca who guides the children through a visual journey explaining the importance of material, dye and techniques used to make their clothes. Each item of the pack is made from recycled or sustainable sources.
