Illustration Lecturer Adam Larkum illustrates ‘One Hundred Steps: The Story of Captain Sir Tom Moore’

BA (Hons) Illustration lecturer Adam Larkum was recently commissioned by Puffin Books to illustrate the book about Captain Sir Tom Moore’s life.

One Hundred Steps: The Story of Captain Sir Tom Moore delves into the colourful and varied life of Captain Sir Tom. It’s a book about not giving up, and what we can achieve if we work together.

BA Illustration lecturer Adam Larkum was approached to illustrate the whole book. “This was a fantastic project to work on,” said Adam. “I especially liked it as it meant doing lots of visual research into the different years of Captain Sir Tom’s life from 1930 to today.”

Sir Captain Tom’s family sent a variety of photographs to Adam for reference. Including Sir Captain Tom in cross country motor races, of his parents and childhood family, and his life in the military during WW2.           “At times I got odd details wrong. On my first attempts at drawing Sir Captain Tom, I drew him with really long legs” said Adam.   “I sent the drawings to his family, who really politely pointed out that Sir Captain Tom was never quite as tall as that!”   “It was such a nice book to work on, about such a positive character. I really like the way that he came up with so many personal positive statements about life” said Adam.
