Success for Textile Design students in SDC competition

BA Textile Design students travelled to London for the judging heats.

BA (Hons) Textile Design students recently scooped success at the annual Society of Dyers and Colourists international design competition.

The competition’s theme for 2019 was Colour and Nature and students were encouraged to submit finished roughs, fabric swatches, moodboards, photographs and illustrations outlining the colour theme.

Third year student Brandon Tan was awarded the winning title in the regional finals category of the competition.

“The SDC event was an amazing opportunity for us to pit ourselves against students from other universities who practice the same subject and share the same passion, but in a friendly manner,” said Brandon.

“More than the incentive of winning, I was glad enough to participate and be able to see what other students beyond NUA are doing, see the similarities and differences in the way we have been taught to practice, and simply get the chance to socialise and chat about what we love.”

Speaking about Brandon’s work, the judges said ‘Brandon embraced the theme and did not choose an obvious outcome.  This concept has great commercial potential and is very innovative.’

Fellow third year student Rosie-May was awarded highly-commended for her woven textiles.

“The competition has supported my belief in the power of colour and really boosted my confidence for the future, I feel as though I have so much more to build up on” Rosie-May said.

“This competition tests the students’ ability to not only design using colour and textiles but also to professionally present on boards and articulate that clearly to the industry judges when interviewed,” said Kate Farley, Course Leader. “This is such good experience for all those involved, and the students in the London heat were very friendly and supportive of all participants, coming together to share their interest in the industry.”

“The students I accompanied to London did themselves and NUA proud. They were professional and reflective on the experience, clearly gaining confidence from the day, and from spending time together helping to discuss and prepare answers about their project.”
