Animation student brings TV ad to life for the 2022 Commonwealth Games
BA (Hons) Animation and VFX Third-year Steven Pascoe worked as a 2D Designer and animator on an advert for the West Midlands Growth Company and rbl agency, supporting the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
The Character Shop is an animation studio based in Birmingham, with clients including the BBC, Microsoft Games Studio, Cbeebies, Nickelodeon, and many more.
The studio approached BA (Hons) Animation and VFX student Steven Pascoe through LinkedIn to create a collection of concept art, character designs, turnarounds, props, assets, backgrounds, and transitions for the ‘Visit Birmingham” film promoting the 2022 Birmingham Commonwealth Games.
“My degree taught me processes and techniques which I utilised whilst working with The Character Shop. These processes included creating turnarounds, mouth sheets, expression sheets, hand sheets, key-posing, 2d animations using the software ‘TVpaint’, and colour design.”

In collaboration with Odelay Films and rbl, the live-action performance shots are overlayed with Steven’s traditional and cut-out 2D animation to celebrate Birmingham’s vibrant culture.
“The two come together for a piece that feels very modern, very arty and very …Birmingham.”
