From Singapore to Norwich: an interview with Ernest Seah
Ernest came to NUA from Singapore as a mature student, having previously worked in arts education. He tells us why he chose to complete his MA Fine Art at Norwich University of the Arts.
Why did you choose to study your MA at NUA?
I decided on NUA because of location. Having lived in various busy and stressful city locations I was very happy to see that the landscape of Norwich was different to what I was used to.
Also the Skype interview I received from the university was warm and friendly and was able to answer my questions about the establishment and the country.
How is your experience of living in Norwich?
I’m having a wonderful time at NUA and in Norwich. I never expected the people here to be so polite and helpful. It’s lucky that I enjoy the cold weather too!
What do you want to do after you graduate?
I am hopefully continuing my work in arts education and doing more exhibitions, and being at NUA has taught me to venture and explore different artistic avenues.
“Notice all the things which are not the same as home and embrace the differences.”
How are your postgraduate studies at NUA preparing you for your career?
Going through the MA definitely makes you feel and experience the real work environment. It is wonderful to work with the other MA students pursuing other disciplines like photography, games design and curation during the MA which makes one realise the different facets of the creative industry.
Postgraduate studies has opened my eyes to various collaborations and problem solving techniques.
What stands out to you about NUA?
Definitely the kindness and understanding of the staff and lecturers. Nothing beats a positive environment.
What advice would you give to other international students to make the most of your MA?
Never stop having fun pursuing your passion. Notice all the things which are not the same as home and embrace the differences and use them as inspiration for your craft. Always have an open heart and open mind.
