Maintaining creative inspiration after graduation
Florence Watson graduated from BA (Hons) Film and Moving Image Production in 2017. After gaining a year long placement on the Channel 4 Production Training Scheme, where she began working as a researcher and assistant script editor at Lime Pictures, she was promoted to Script editor on Hollyoaks in September 2018 and has since worked on nearly 100 episodes, equalling approximately 45 hours of television. In February 2020, Florence begins working as a script editor on Neal Street Productions’ flagship show Call the Midwife. We catch up with her about life after university and Florence offers her advice to students on maintaining creative inspiration after graduation.
1. Find new communities.
Whether you’re staying in Norwich or moving home or elsewhere, look for new communities in your area that you can get involved in.
It’s a great way of meeting new people and staying connected with your interests, and if you’re going back home you might be surprised to find creative communities you didn’t know existed previously.
2. Set manageable goals.
Building your creative energy back up after graduating can be difficult. I would recommend setting manageable goals for yourself- be realistic about who you are, your behaviour patterns and what works for you.
For example, if you know you struggle working from home then create a work space that isn’t in your house- this could be in a cafe or renting a studio space.
3. Stay connected with your classmates.
Your classmates are your connections. Keep in touch and stay up to date with them – get advice from them if you see them doing something you’re interested in. You’re all starting from the same position, so if someone is doing really well, ask them how and use it as an opportunity to learn.
