Meet the Graduate Makers 2021 – Mahisha Ahmed, BA Interior Design
In this blog series, we’re showcasing some of our 2021 graduate Makers and Creators. We meet Norwich native and BA (Hons) Interior Design graduate Mahisha Ahmed. Mahisha specialises in workplace interior design, taking inspiration from the adjustment of work spaces during the pandemic and the need for different spaces to focus. Mahisha is a champion Black Belt in Karate and recently started working full-time as an Interior Designer at Bluespace, a commercial interior design company in Norfolk.
Why did you choose to study Interior Design?
I was first inspired by watching shows such as Interior Design Masters and 60 Minute Makeover. Through this, I was captivated by different design styles and how they were constructed, which is what sparked my interest in interior design.
What is your work all about?
My work demonstrates a contemporary style with some elements of Bauhaus. My concepts for my final project were inspired by an interest in how people have worked through the pandemic in different workspaces.
In particular, I was interested in office design and how different people require different spaces to focus.
What’s the one thing you wish you’d known before starting your degree?
Before starting my degree, I wish I’d know about all of the rules and regulations involved when designing a space, so that I know how to make designs more practical and inclusive for all.
Why do you feel people should visit the Graduate Showcase?
People should visit the Graduate Showcase website as there is so much variety. Everyone’s projects are so unique and individual to them.
How do you feel the pandemic has impacted the interior design industry?
The pandemic has impacted mainly commercial interior design, as people can now work remotely, which has affected the need for these types of spaces. Designs for future spaces need to be reimagined so that they can be used effectively.
Finally, where is your favourite spot in Norwich?
My favourite place in Norwich is Riverside, as there are some extraordinary views of the river and a variety of entertainment hot spots.
