Sneak peak at BA Photography online exhibition

Year 2 BA (Hons) Photography students have taken their exhibition online due to Covid-19, launching 3 February 2021 at 7pm. Ahead of the launch, Bethany Unsworth talks us through some of the work on show. 

Creative Voices is an online exhibition curated by Year 2 that highlights current affairs within social, political, economic and environmental parameters.

All 48 of us will be displaying our work through a digital format, and following the launch we will hold an interactive zoom call as an opportunity to meet the photographers. For now, I’m going to share a sneak peak of my work and three other photographers, who all highlight very different themes within their projects.

Bethany Daniels

Bethany’s work centres around the strain and effects of consumerism in modern day society. She’s focusing on how corporate companies make profits from societies’ insecurities.

Her bold use of colour is there to provide a colourful aesthetic to contrast with the heavy context behind the photographs.

Nicola Bates

Nicola Bates has been exploring the themes of friendship and adulthood, and the impact of Covid-19. Nicola feels that University students have been the least considered during the pandemic and so her project highlights her support bubble who mirror her sentiments. Bates’ collection is shot in such an intimate way that it invites us into her group which I feel really shows the importance of friendship in these testing times.

Tadas Kirtikilis

Tadas Kirtikilis is looking at something I feel we can all relate to during this pandemic. His project focusses on the feeling of a creative block during times of uncertainty. His use of dramatic lighting helps to highlight the themes of mental distress and dislocation within his collection of cinematic imagery.

Bethany Unsworth

I’ve been looking into the mandatory use of face masks and how they have affected our identities during this pandemic. Instead of looking at them in a negative light, I’ve decided to celebrate masks through the use of Facetime and collaboration with designers on a global scale.

This medium has given me the opportunity to continue my practice during these testing times as well as work with creatives I’d never have the chance to usually.
