BA Film and Moving Image Production graduate selected for Canadian film festival

2020 BA (Hons) Film and Moving Image Production graduate Daniel Franklin has had his film Dermis selected for the Digital Juice Short Film and Animation Festival. 

Dermis was born out of Daniel’s love of skin, and is an opportunity for him as a visual artist to showcase the undergarment to everything we clothe ourselves with. He uses themes of metamorphosis and abstraction to conceptualise the ritualistic behaviours that are formed when we try to embrace the skin we’re in. 

Dermis is a short meditative film, an image-based study of the body. Daniel comments about his creative process, “I found inspiration in the works of fine artist Jenny Saville, where her work looks at the body as an instrument to design, dissect and disassemble at the host’s discretion. Other key creatives that featured within my pool of inspiration for this project are Daniel Askill, Steve McQueen, various paintings from the Italian Renaissance period and almost anything found on Nowness”. 

Dermis has been selected to show at the Digital Juice Short Film and Animation Festival in Canada later this year, with a screening date in November 2020. Since graduating Daniel has begun developing the next two projects which will form a triptych of moving image alongside Dermis. Keep up with his work over on his Instagram.
