BA Fine Art student and graduate medals selected for exhibition
Jillian Ballas and Sophie Hockaday, BA (Hons) Fine Art, and 2020 graduate Mae-ling Yeung, have had their work selected for exhibition from the postponed Student Medal Project 2020. The exhibition will run in the Spotlight Gallery at the Royal Cornwall Museum from 17 May, with medals created around the theme The Natural World.
Medals pictured by Jillian Ballas, Sophie Hockaday and Mae-ling Yeung.
Sophie’s medal is titled Endangered, and she saw the project as a chance to engage in real issues around the extinction of animals: “I produced this piece on the critically endangered Ploughshare Tortoise.”
US student Jillian’s work always revolves around environmentalism. After spending time researching ecology, her piece emulates “the concepts of eons and the state of constant change. The medal reflects upon geological time and how the earth is always going through phases.”
Mae-ling graduated from BA (Hons) Fine Art in 2020. Her medal highlights the depleting species commonly known as pangolins:
“Pangolins are the most trafficked mammals and are in high demand for their meat and scales, they range from vulnerable to critically endangered. I wanted to express their endangerment through this work.”
The exhibition will run from 17 May – 7 August.
