Beyond the Frame photography competition 2025

The Beyond the Frame photography competition is open to students aged 11 to 19 both in the UK and around the world, who are in full-time Secondary or Further education.

You do not need to be studying Photography or a creative subject in order to enter.

The Beyond the Frame competition was launched in 2017 to encourage young photographers to develop their craft and showcase their talent. In its debut year, the competition attracted more than 170 entries; in 2024, we had over 650 entries from around the world.

Judges

BA (Hons) Photography course leader James Smith will be joined by acclaimed photographers Elisa Iannacone and Richard Seymour, to judge this year’s entries and award the first prize of a new EOS R50 camera and RF-S 18-45mm lens from Canon for each age category.

Themes for 2025

This year we are using the UN Sustainable Development Goals as our competition themes and awards will be given under the categories of:

‘Gender Equality’

‘Responsible Production & Consumption’

Categories

  • 11-15 age category
  • 16-19 age category

When thinking about the work you’d like to produce and enter for the competition you should consider the things that interest and excite you. Photography gives you the opportunity to explore and investigate the things that you care about, and through your approach you can tell others why your subject is so interesting.

Don’t worry about fitting your work too closely to the categories. Focus on finding a subject that engages you and best shows your abilities, as this will shine through for the judges.

How to enter

You can enter up to three photographs and one piece of moving image (up to one minute in length). They can be a series on the same theme or independent images.

They must all be your own work and have been created after 16 September 2024.

For full information and to apply, please visit the Beyond the Frame website.

Submission Deadline

Wednesday 26 February 2025, 4pm (GMT)

Awards exhibition

Shortlisted entrants will be informed via email in late March 2025 and their work will be displayed online and in the event exhibition in April 2025. Winners will be announced at the awards event, April 2025.
