Fashion graduate wins Hobbs coat design competition

Freya Scoggins’ winning ‘Marta’ anorak design became part of the Hobbs main outerwear collection

BA (Hons) Fashion graduate Freya Scoggins has won a design brief set by fashion retailer Hobbs, in which she was tasked to design a collection of six coats based on English heritage. The design brief was set to all students in their second year at NUA.

“I love history, and I am interested in traditional skills, that have largely been forgotten” said Freya.

“I chose the fishing industry. I found it inspiring how fishermen’s clothes had to be hard-wearing and practical, yet the functional design often looked actually quite contemporary.”

On creating the concept for the coat, Freya referred back to a taught unit on tailoring, which involved her learning certain processes of make which she fed into the design of the coat.

“This knowledge of making helped me design something which I knew would be possible to manufacture” she said.

Since graduating, Freya has been working on commissioned knitwear projects using a personal process she discovered during her time at NUA.
