Third year student Lorna Hill wins the Carmelite Prize 2021
The Carmelite Prize is an annual competition ran by Hachette Children’s Group, one of the largest children’s publishers in the UK. This competition is open to illustration and design students across the country. Students respond to a brief set by a collaborating author. This year’s author is Corrinne Averiss and her picture book ‘Moon Mouse‘.
The story follows the adventure of a mouse who lives on the moon. He lives alone yet finds comfort from watching birthday parties through his golden telescope.
The book follows his adventure down to earth to return a balloon to a birthday boy after it flies away. Moon Mouse is story of friendship, determination, and courage. The distance between moon mouse and Earth could be seen as a reflection of the distance between loved ones during the pandemic.
“To be this year’s winner is an incredible honour. I feel so privileged to be part of a competition of such huge and diverse talent”
Lorna Hill
NUA has had years of success in this competition, however Lorna, who is in her third year of BA (Hons) Illustration, is the first student from NUA to outright win the prize.
“Working with Corrinne’s heart-warming Moon Mouse text has been a real joy and breath of fresh air for myself in what has been a challenging year for us all” said Lorna.
Lorna wins a cash prize of £1,000 and may be selected to work with Hodder Children’s Books on the final illustrations.
Huge congratulations, Lorna!
