Moveable Estates

12.30-2.30pm Artists introduction, 1pm Meeting place – car park adjacent to Dunes Cafe, Winterton-on-Sea, Great Yarmouth, NR29 4AJ, Norfolk Norwich University of the Arts and East GalleryNUA in collaboration with East Contemporary Visual Arts Network (ECVAN) invite the public join them for the launch of a new ‘walking’ artwork, commenting on coastal erosion and environmental change, at Winterton-on-Sea, Norfolk.

The artwork

Cooking Sections, the artists behind the artwork, will unveil a new audio-narrative called ‘Moveable Estates’.

Set at Winterton-on-sea, Moveable Estates takes the form of a 30-minute audio guided walk, starting on the pad of a recently relocated fisherman’s shed overlooking the beach at Winterton.

The narrator explores stories of previous shorelines that are still present in the landscape: from harbour remains to coastal structures that are all found today inland, as well as the ghostly presence of lighthouses and prosperous towns that lie beneath the water.

The project takes as a point of departure references of buildings that have been uprooted and moved from their original location due to economic incentives, local tradition, cultural shift or unstable ground, in Norfolk, and elsewhere. Moveable Estates invites listeners to think about the future role of cities in envisioning fluctuating horizons.

• The event is free with food and refreshments provided.
• Free return coach travel from Norwich University of the Arts (first come first served) to Winterton available, please book by emailing the gallery.
• Please meet at the car park at Dunes Café, Winterton-on-Sea, Norfolk by 12.30pm.
• The artists invite participants to bring along personal stories, photographs or newspaper clipping to share
• Please bring an iPhone, Android phone, or tablet device and a set of headphones to download the artwork and join in with the first walk.
• Weather appropriate footwear and clothing should be worn. Please note that the site is an uneven, cliff-side location and children should be accompanied at all times.
