Textile Design students win Helen Hoyte Student Award

Three students from BA (Hons) Textile Design awarded cash prizes for their response to a commemorative scarf brief set by the Costume & Textile Association.

Second year students Paula Oliveira, Laura Barnwell and Nell Rose were awarded first, second and third prize in the Helen Hoyte Student Award, set by the Costume & Textile Association (C&TA).

They were tasked by the C&TA to design and digitally print a commemorative scarf based on an event, place or person of their choice. Students were asked to present their work showing development of their ideas up to the final printed scarf.

Paula, who won first prize, designed a scarf around Norwich Market which had recently won British Market of the Year.

“The market is a very important part of the city so that’s why I decided to choose this topic” said Paula.

“I started by taking pictures and doing drawings of the market looking at the different colours and shapes. I then created some polychromatic prints which were then digitally printed onto fabric”

Laura, who won second prize, chose to base her scarf around conservation within Norfolk and the Norfolk landscape that attracted a variety of migrating bird species.

“There are many species of birds that are at risk, so I tried to investigate that to some extent and represent them in my scarf” she said.

Nell Rose, who won third prize, chose to commemorate a family member who served in the war.

“I was lucky to have a family member who had such a rich history” she said. “I visited the Imperial War Museum in Duxford to do some visual research on planes before developing it into a final print onto fabric.”
