Textile Design student named regional winner at annual SDC Competition

Maisie Miller was awarded the prize for her project ‘From Peak to Peak’ and will go on to the national ceremony later this year.

Third year BA (Hons) Textile Design student Maisie Miller was awarded the title of Regional Winner at the annual competition ran by Society of Dyers and Colourists. 

The global competition sets a theme that students must respond to through a textile-based project, with an aim to help entrants develop an in-depth understanding of colour use, and sustainability throughout the textile supply chain. This year’s theme was ‘Colour and Universe’.

“My project, titled ‘From Peak to Peak’, responded to the theme as I was focusing on portraying the Peak Disrict and its beauty, playing with colour in the landscapes” said Maisie.

“Inspired by fauvist painters, I used unrealistic colour palettes and made the landscapes more uplifting by my choice of colour palette. I also find it interesting how we all have an understanding of the universe through colour. Colours represent certain things and I like to disrupt this. For example, people understand grass to be green so what happens if I make it pink. It is interesting to challenge this.”

“I had a wonderful day at the SDC heats. It was so lovely to meet with other students from different universities and share our projects with one another” Maisie added.

“Our students were praised by the judges for their exciting work and ability to communicate their passion, I was very proud” said Kate Farley, Course Leader for BA (Hons) Textile Design and BA (Hons) Fashion.

Maisie will move on to the national finals later this year.
