BA Fashion and BA Textile Design students begin working on garment design for local drag queen Miss Dee Licious

Miss Dee Licious approached Norwich University of the Arts with a collaborative garment project in mind.

East Anglian drag royalty Miss Dee Licious has launched a collaborative garment design project with our BA (Hons) Fashion and BA (Hons) Textile Design students. The students will be exploring two garment storylines: performance and statement.

She won Miss Charity Drag in 2019-20, wearing garments she made herself.

“I make all of my garments myself,” said Miss Dee. “Throughout the first lockdown, I designed my own patterns and made two dresses out of an old duvet cover.”

“Drag is exploding, and garments are a great way to explore your creativity and frugality,” she said.

Throughout the project, students will be trying to keep costs as low as possible.

“The drag lifestyle is champagne fantasy but with beer money!” said Miss Dee. “Students also have to be careful where they spend money, so this is a great project for them to put their creativity to good use.”

The brief set to the students is to think creatively along the two storylines, with sustainability in mind. Students will be looking at creating new garments from thrifted fabric, supplied by Miss Dee.

In addition, the students will look at upcycling current garments using textile processes such as embellishment and embroidery.

“When it comes to fashion, drag is very competitive – you have to stand out,” she said. “I also want my garments to convey a message. Drag is a statement.”
