BA Graphic Communication graduate, nominated in World Brand Design Society Student Awards
Ruby Douglass, who graduated from BA (Hons) Graphic Communication in 2021, had her project nominated in the ‘Brand Design Creation’ category.
The World Brand Design Society champion the creative industry and creative education across the world. The independent awards are open to creatives of all levels: whether you’re in agency, in-house, freelance or a student.
Ruby’s concept for luxury hotel ‘The Gunpowder Mill’ is nominated for an award under the student category.
The driving force behind Ruby’s idea is the hotel’s history and location. The Mill is a 19th Century gunpowder factory located in Cornwall.
“The visual identity sparked from one vital insight,’ said Ruby, “that the Mill utilised the natural world at every turn to keep its workers safe.”
Ruby’s starting point was a simple colour palette: copper, teal and a deep green. These colours are rooted in the history of the Mill; whilst other factories were made of steel, The Gunpowder Mill used copper.
Taking inspiration from 19th Century print, Ruby created a series of detailed illustrations to expand on the brand, applying these to menus, websites, gifts and room keys.
