A complete guide to the NUA SU Societies

Written by Hannah Linsdell, Norwich University of the Arts Students’ Union President. NUA Students’ Union (NUASU) is here to help make the student experience at NUA the best it can be.

We do that through a wide range of support services and areas of work, such as student voice and representation, wellbeing and welfare campaigns, and events and activities. Another big part of NUASU is encouraging and supporting clubs and societies for students to join and enjoy.

All NUASU clubs and societies at NUA can apply for funding from the Students’ Union and are student-led by volunteer Society Officers.

There are over thirty clubs and societies for students to join at NUA; from sports societies such as Football, Swimming, Basketball and Rugby, to Yoga & Wellbeing, Pride, Disney and Life Drawing, to creating our student magazine ‘Storehouse… there is something for everyone, and if there isn’t, then feel free to propose a new one!

The full list of NUASU clubs and societies is available on the Students’ Union website.

Why join a society?

  • Meet new people who have a similar interest to you
  • Have fun and take a break from studies and the studio
  • Our sports societies are a great way to exercise and help keep fit
  • Learn new skills
  • Explore Norwich and the wider community through trips and meetings held off campus.

Where do societies meet?

Societies meet throughout the week, in either the afternoon or evening. Lots of societies meet on a Wednesday, but the schedule of meet-ups is all the way through from Monday to Thursday. A full schedule is available on our Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).

How do I join a society?

It’s super easy! For most of our societies there is no signing up process required to join – just turn up! Have a look at the schedule on the VLE to see when and where societies meet, most meet on campus, but some use external facilities such as our sports societies. On the schedule you’ll also see details of how to contact the Society Officers if you’d like to find out.

It is important to note that NUASU clubs and societies are just for NUA students.

Do I have to pay to become a member of a society?

Most of the societies at NUA are free to join as the Students’ Union covers the costs for its members, to allow as many students as possible to benefit. A small number of our societies ask their members to pay subs, which can either be paid weekly or termly.

Most of our sports societies for example require their members to pay subs to help cover the cost of the sports facilities. You can pay your subs and register for these societies via the VLE.

When can I join a society?

It’s never too late join a society, you can join at any point in the academic year. Society officers are always looking for new members for their society!

Can I start a new society?

New club and society applications are always encouraged! All NUASU clubs and societies can apply to receive funding from the Students’ Union and help and support is available to Society Officers throughout the year.

If you have an idea for a new society at NUA you can either download the information pack on the Students’ Union website, or pop into the SU offices in St Andrews House for a chat.
