Student blog – 5 things to do in Norwich this autumn
The leaves are golden, there’s a chill in the air and a hint of Pumpkin Spice about…Tanicha Toro-Oloto (BA Film and Moving Image Production) selects her favourite things to do in autumn 2021 in Norwich.
1. Black History Month in Norfolk
October is Black History Month and ‘Norfolk Black History Month BHM’ has lots of events planned for the month. Many of the events are free and a great opportunity to celebrate diverse cultures. They have loads of other events on such as workshops, performances and exhibitions so keep an eye out as there is something for everyone.
2. Wild Paths Festival
After having to scale down due to Covid-19 last year, Wild Paths Festival is back from 14 – 17 October. A three day art and music festival takes over Norwich, with venues coming alive with all genres; indie, hip-hop, neo-soul, post-punk, new-wave jazz and more.
There will also be the ‘Big Fat Art Cart’ run by NUA graduates, live poetry (featuring Piers Harrison-Reid), Supper Clubs and a music, art and entertainment conference.
The festival has offered a large discount on tickets for NUA students and the conference is free with your student ID!
3. Morwenna Farrell Pop-Up Shop
I came across a poster for a pop-up shop at Studio 20 in an underpass. On the weekend of the 30 and 31 October, illustrator Morwenna Farrell will be selling vintage, organic, hand painted clothing and screenprints to buy. Morwenna is also a NUA graduate and even if you just go to browse, it is a nice way to spend the weekend and support artists.
4. Open Mic nights at the Louis Marchesi
I recently went to the Louis Marchesi, near the Cathedral. It is an intimate, cosy pub that hosts open mic nights every Wednesday. So if you’re a musician yourself, I would definitely recommend it to play or network. Alternatively, if you are like me and just want to watch, that’s also fine.
5. Lunchtime Meditation
The Norwich Buddhist Centre offers ‘Lunchtime Lifts’, a quick 30 minute meditation session every Wednesday, online with a discount for students at £4 per session.
…Tanicha’s top student discount tip
As we settle into the colder months, snuggling into a cafe with a good book or some work is definitely on my to do list.
I am a sucker for a chai latte and Norwich has a wonderful selection of cafes. Not to mention a fine selection of cake too may I add too. A lot of places offer student discounts so don’t be shy to ask. Logan’s offer 15% off, so recently I enjoyed a Mediterranean vegetable panini for £5.35 instead of £6.30.
