BA Design for Publishing student’s work taken into production

Louise Aspinall’s book cover project outcome was loved so much by the client, publisher and editor that it was taken into live production.

Third year BA (Hons) Design for Publishing student Louise Aspinall’s response to a live brief was loved so much by the the publisher, editor and author that it has been taken into live production.

Louise took part in a live brief set by Little, Brown Book Group who visit NUA regularly and set a live brief to students every year.

All second year students on BA Design for Publishing were asked to design a front and back cover for A Seat at the Table by Amy Raphael, a live client brief that Little, Brown were also working on. The book has a series of interviews with women in the music industry.

“I originally had a completely different design, as the book itself had a completely different name,” said Louise, “Little, Brown wanted to make it as close to industry working as possible so we all had to deal with a title change partway through designing”

“I came up with the concept for the cover based around a cassette tape, and I created lots of hand rendered typography around it, which was the only tweak I had to make to the cover. Becky at Little, Brown who was the actual designer of the cover out at the moment, went away and recreated my cassette image.”

Louise’s version of the book cover will be available from June 2020.
