Application Procedure

Is the Curriculum Vitae an exhibition only resume or should it include relative work experience and awards etc?

The CV should include information relevant to the applicant’s creative practice and research outputs. If work experience/awards are directly relevant to this, then they can be included.

Do we need to know exactly which departments of Norwich University of the Arts we want to work with; can you expand on what’s on offer?

We would like to know what faculty within the university are you most interested in working alongside.

What are the different faculties at the University?

See ‘Programmes and Facilities at Norwich’ for more information about what programmes are offered

Is it ok to identify two or more faculties at Norwich University of the Arts to work alongside or is it better to just state one?

We welcome interdisciplinary project applications.

“How do you envisage your project developing while you are part of Norwich University of the Arts?” – Do you mean what might we do differently once we are at Norwich than what we do now, based on the facilities and other opportunities there? Or is it more about us proposing a schedule of activity for the project, i.e., what we expect to be working on each month?

The proposal should relate to our Research & Knowledge Exchange strategy priorities and yes – we expect the fellowship to respond to the University environment and not just continue to do work they would have done anyway.

Proposed activity and area of research:

Can you show/discuss a couple of examples of previous fellowships?

The Fellowships is a new initiative launched in 2023 by East Gallery with support from Norwich University of the Arts so we do not have previous examples to share.

Can the research include dialogue with various local communities outside Norwich University of the Arts?

Yes, we welcome research projects that can demonstrate a willingness and dedication to form part of the wider research community at Norwich University of the Arts and beyond, to work with Norwich University of the Arts students and engage with local communities.

Is East Gallery interested in reaching new communities – Can I involve other parts of the Norfolk community?

Yes, we welcome research projects that can demonstrate a willingness and dedication to form part of the wider research community at Norwich University of the Arts and beyond, to work with Norwich University of the Arts students and engage with communities outside of the University.

Does the work produced for the Fellowship have to be entirely new. Or could successful Fellows consolidate current ideas and/or build on existing work, this could involve exploring new collaborations and contexts / creating new pieces as part of its ongoing development?

The Fellow should work on an agreed body of new work as part of the wider research culture at Norwich University of the Arts.

Would you regard art-based community activities such as exhibition curation, which engaged with large audiences, equivalent to research activities?

Applicants need to explain how the research projects and activities included in the application demonstrate a high level of research activity and national/international profile of the research/project outcomes.

What counts as research activity?

Research activities are activities that result in the creation of new knowledge and/or the use of existing knowledge in a new and creative way so as to generate new concepts, methodologies and understandings.

You’ve talked about this being a research process. How specific do you want people to be about the final outcome?

You do not need to be specific about the final outcome, but you do need to be clear about the concept and process of the project.

Can I invite other artists to collaborate with me on my project?

Yes, you can, but any agreements you have with other artists would be directly between you and them, and if you were to pay artist fees and expenses this would come from your production budget.

Can you propose to make just one artwork?

That would be dependent on the type or work the Fellow is producing, the medium, discipline, and how the Fellow proposes to use East Gallery’s exhibition space to display the outcomes of their Fellowship.

Portfolio: “(min 10 images)” Are you looking for a relatively wide work to represent our significant work to date for you to capture who we are as an artist – as well as to grasp our skills, interests and capability? Or, are you looking for a more narrowed-down portfolio that is specifically relevant to the chosen project relating to this application? Or, perhaps somewhere in between?

The images included in the portfolio should support the applicant’s proposal by demonstrating that the applicant has a minimum of 2 year’s professional practice in your field, as well as a high level of existing research activity and national/international profile of the outcomes, projects and associated work.

I also noted you chose the wording “10 relevant images”. Am I right to understand that you are not necessarily looking for 10 different works, but this (minimum of) 10 images can include the details or different angles shot of the work?

The images included in the portfolio should support the applicant’s proposal by illustrating projects/activities which demonstrate a high level of research activity and national/international profile of the applicant’s research/project outcomes.

References – can you elaborate on whether these references should be academic or work references, who would be ideal?

The references should have knowledge of and be able to speak about the applicant’s creative practice and research outputs.

If we worked with a member of staff from Norwich University of the Arts on a previous project, can we include them as a reference?

Yes, as long as they are not involved in the selection or interview process.

Is the application deadline set in stone?

Yes, it is. We have a short timeframe in which to review the applications and shortlist applicants for interview to ensure we are able to meet the dates we have specified in the Open Call, and to allow sufficient time for the selected Fellows to plan for the start of the Fellowships in November.
