Commitment from the Fellows

Do you expect the Fellows to move to Norwich if they are not based there?

No we do not, however you will need to ensure that you spend sufficient time on campus to carry out the Fellowship project, engage with staff and students, and deliver the exhibition at East Gallery. Any travel costs to and from Norwich for this purpose will need to be covered by the £20,000 grant.

Is there an exact time starting in November?

We have not specified an exact start date in November to offer some flexibility to the selected Fellows.

What time commitment is expected from the Fellows?

How many days would the Fellow be expected to be on site, approximately?

During the agreed period of research activity (10 months), the Fellows are required to research, develop, and produce innovative work of international standing from within Norwich University of the Arts. While we accept that some of this work may occur off-campus, the Fellow would be committed to spending a proportion of time on campus and have regular check-ins with supervisory staff. The number of days is not prescribed, but the Fellow should allow sufficient time on campus to meet the objectives of the Fellowship.

Can Fellows fit their time in Norwich around other full-time commitments – for example, time spent in Norwich for production would take place over two weeks in Easter and two months in the summer break; and research, admin, and other engagement with Norwich University of the Arts staff would take place online for the rest of the year.

Please see the answer above: “How many days would the Fellow be expected to be on site, approximately?”

Please also see the answer below: “Access to studio/facilities: What times and days is access permitted to the university and facilities? Will this be restricted during academic holidays?”

I would have some part time lecturing commitments during the period of the fellowship. Would this be acceptable?

Please see the answer above: “How many days would the Fellow be expected to be on site, approximately?”

Is the fellowship created to also engage with students within the University, if yes, what percent of the Fellowship is this?

We are looking for candidates who can demonstrate a willingness and dedication to form part of the wider research community at Norwich University of the Arts and beyond, to work with Norwich University of the Arts students and run community events.  The percentage of time the Fellows will spend with students is not prescribed and will be decided between the appointed Fellows, East Gallery, and Norwich University of the Arts’ academic staff.

Would it be feasible, for example, for students to do kind of work experience on the project so that they’re really involved in the production of the work?

Any activities that students do outside of course work is voluntary, so we wouldn’t prescribe to them that they must do this. The Fellows will have an opportunity to present their work to staff and students and propose any areas where they might need some support.

Can we include exchanges for students with other academic institutions in our proposal?

Yes, again, it would be voluntary for students to be involved, depending on if they have time and want to participate in such activities.

Each Fellowship will include the creation of an editioned artwork to be sold exclusively at East Gallery promoting the Fellowships and raising essential funds for the venue and its wider programme. The first copy of the edition will enter the Norwich University of the Arts Collection.

The medium of the artwork is not prescribed and will be decided between the appointed Fellows, East Gallery, and Norwich University of the Arts’ technical staff.

A separate Sales Agreement must be signed between East Gallery and yourself, and/or any representing commercial dealer, outlining that any work sold during the Fellowship or produced as a part thereof, after the period contract, will be subject to a commission rate to recoup costs to the university. It is likely that any sales will automatically be subject to a 25% fee from Norwich University of the Arts to cover material and administration costs.

They are provisionally programmed for September and October 2024, but this may change.
