1. Marriott’s Way

Stretching for 26 miles from Norwich to Aylsham in north Norfolk, Marriott’s Way is a scenic cycling route that follows the path of a former railway line. The trail is a mixture of pavement and off-road, but it’s all pretty flat and offers comfortable cycling for almost any bicycle.

Why not pack a picnic and spend a day exploring this peaceful route, stopping along the way to admire the wildlife, historic landmarks, and tranquil riverside views. Don’t worry, you don’t have to do the whole 26 miles in one go! Passing through towns and villages along the way means you can find your way back to Norwich by train or bus if you don’t fancy cycling the return trip.

2. Norwich riverside and Cathedral Quarter

For a leisurely bike ride with stunning waterfront views, head to the river — without a doubt one of Norwich’s greatest assets.

Starting from Norwich Uni’s St. Georges and Guntons buildings, you can follow the riverside path all the way to the train station (and beyond, if you know where you’re going!)

This popular cycling route follows the banks of the river Wensum, taking you past historic landmarks such as Norwich Cathedral, Pull’s Ferry, and Cow Tower. Stop for a coffee at the beautiful riverside Red Lion pub or the Adam and Eve, the oldest (and some say most haunted) pub in Norwich.

Located just outside the city centre, you can get to Whitlingham in no time at all if you jump on a bike. The centrepiece of this beautiful nature reserve is a stunning broad encircled by footpaths and cycle trails. Surrounded by woods and wetlands, it offers a welcome escape from city life; a pocket of peaceful wilderness where you can switch off and enjoy the great outdoors. Take a break from cycling to enjoy the cafe or even the Outdoor Education Centre, where you can try out things like kayaking and paddle boarding.

4. UEA Broad and the Sainsbury Centre

Located on the outskirts of Norwich, the University of East Anglia’s campus is worth a visit for a day out with wildlife, scenery and a bit of culture. getting from our campus to Norwich’s outskirts can be a bit tricky. It’s a long walk from Norwich Uni’s city centre campus, but if the weather’s nice it’s a good distance for a cycle. You’ll have to navigate some road cycling, but much of the route can incorporate roads with cycle paths. Once you’re there, you have the option of exploring UEA Broad, the lake right next to the campus, or even the neighbouring Earlham Park if you’d like a longer trek. Make sure to pop into the Sainsbury Centre to explore its excellent collection of art and historical artefacts, including masters like Pablo Picasso and Francis Bacon. 

5. Norwich City Centre

Who says you need to leave the city to enjoy a bike ride? Norwich city centre is a cyclist-friendly destination with plenty of bike lanes, designated cycling routes, and traffic-free areas to explore.
