Success for Norwich graduates at Royal Television Society East Awards
Graduates from Norwich University of the Arts won in both the Drama and Factual categories, scooping the top prize in all categories in which they were nominated.
RTS East Student Awards celebrate the best in student filmmaking across the eastern region. Winning films She Hears Crying (dir. George Irwin) and Under the Blanket (dir. Tanicha Toro Oloto) were both produced by alumni of BA (Hons) Film and Moving Image Production.
Winning in the Factual category was Under the Blanket, an observational documentary exploring the impact of a mother’s actions upon her children and extended family. Tanicha Toro Oloto directed, shot and edited the film, and sound was designed by Raphaela Dowding-Green.
She Hears Crying also overcame tough competition to win in the Drama category. An experimental psychological drama, the film follows a young woman attempting to cope with past trauma and the sounds of their internalised memories. The film was written and directed by George Irwin, Billy Bramwell recorded and designed sound and Corey Scanlon was the cinematographer.
Liam Wells, Course Leader BA (Hons) Film and Moving Image Production commented on this year’s competition. ‘Winning a Royal Television Society (RTS) Student Award is a wonderful industry recognition for the hard work of our creative filmmakers. The whole Film course team were behind our graduates who won awards against some very strong competition from other Universities. An RTS award is a seal of quality, and has the capacity to open doors for new and emerging filmmakers. Both George Irwin’s She Hears Crying and Tanicha Toro Oloto’s Under the Blanket are fine examples of the critical, creative and collaborative film production here at Norwich. We are so pleased to see them awarded by industry.’
